Our tips for car travel

To this point, we have traveled about 3400 miles in car, and still having fun! Here are some the things that have helped make travel easier:
- Bring food. Can never have too much. (Annie)
- Rent books on tape from library or regular books if you don't get car sick. (Katie)
- Consider a rental car with all the latest gadgets (including satellite radio). Everything looks new when our family has two ten year old cars. (Jerry)
- However, if you don't have the latest technology you should definitely make sure you have an iPod/ music playlist for your trip. It is so nice to listen to your fav songs on the road!!! (Annie)
- Bring a garbage bag, it is very helpful. (Katie)
- Have wipes and hand sanitizer so if you use an outhouse or spill something. (Katie)
- Gas up often and before needle hits "E". Driving for long stretches with low fuel light on in South Dakota or national parks with no gasoline nearby can be a bit unnerving (Jerry)
- Limit long drives - as a rule try not to drive more than 300 miles in a day, and break up long drives with site seeing (Chris)
- Go off road! Avoid interstates when possible. Our stretch of chicago-wisconsin-iowa-minnesota was "interstate-free", and included some of our favorite drives (Chris)
- Mad Libs are a must!!! They make things fun in the car. (Annie)
- Blankets are very comfortable when your lost at night (cough cough in SD) and you want to sleep!
- BRING A CAMERA!!! There are so many things that you will want to snap! (Katie)
- Clean the car regularly. Have kids responsible for keeping their own area organized. (chris)
